MARKET BRIEF | May 2022

A BRIEF look at what’s happening in the logistics and shipping industry.

LATEST VESSEL WAIT TIMES

East Coast
  • New York/New Jersey: 10 days
  • Norfolk: 3 days
  • Charleston: 2 days
  • Savannah: 4 days
  • Miami: 3 days
West Coast
  • Long Beach: 16 days
  • Los Angeles: 17 days
  • Seattle: 2 days (see below)
  • Oakland: 7 days (arrivals from Asia); 10 days (Germany)
Gulf Coast
  • Houston: 8 days
Containers coming into Seattle can sit for up to five (5) weeks in a closed area at a terminal until they can be picked up. All operations are delayed about a month, and transit times are much longer than in previous weeks, due to blank sailings and vessel delays at the port, which push other vessels further back in line.

WIDESPREAD CHASSIS & EQUIPMENT SHORTAGES

Shortage of container equipment for hazardous cargo in Houston is an additional issue that affects operations in the Gulf Coast, especially for freight moving to Los Angeles. There are continuous chassis shortages in Los Angeles/Long Beach, New York, Philadelphia, St. Louis, Columbus, Cleveland, Chicago, Memphis, Atlanta, Nashville, and Louisville. Overall equipment availability remains an issue in Atlanta, Chicago, Cincinnati, Columbus, Detroit, Kansas City, Minneapolis, Memphis, Nashville, Omaha, St. Louis, South Florida, and Seattle. As a result, the trucking industry can only accommodate less than 75% of its demand in California, Washington, Texas, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, New York, and New Jersey.
