MARKET BRIEF | September 2022

A BRIEF look at what’s happening in the logistics and shipping industry.

RAILROAD STRIKE AVERTED

Negotiations are complete between government officials, the railroads, and the union representatives for rail freight workers. An agreement has been reached, and it is expected that railroads will resume with transporting cargo as usual. This ends the weeks-long speculation of a strike, major service delays, and the possibility of freight needing to be rerouted through the full truckload market. The process of ratifying this agreement should take place over the next couple of weeks.

RETAIL INVENTORY BACKUP

Typically, in August and September, holiday retail freight begins to arrive at ports to be made available for purchase in November and December. With some of the lowest maritime import numbers since June 2022, that will not be the case this year. Retailers have been reporting excessive inventory all year, and have not been making much progress on clearing it. However, not all of this is inventory is needed for holiday purchases, so there will likely be an increase throughout the next few months. This holiday season can be expected to be less chaotic, compared to the last two holiday peaks, since there is not much urgency to move freight in the current environment.
